Mohammed Saleem, Arfath’s father, stated that after their last conversation on March 7, he turned off his cellphone. An unknown caller called Mr. Saleem on March 19 and claimed that Arfath had been abducted by a drug-selling gang and that they were owed $1,200.

“My son was abducted, and the caller told me this over the phone, demanding money. I received a call from an unknown number. The payment method was not mentioned by the caller. The caller refused to allow us to speak with my son when I asked him to,” Mr. Saleem told news agency PTI.

This year, there have been several deaths of Indian and Indian-origin students in the US. Indian students studying in the US and their families back home are shocked and concerned about the two consecutive deaths. Of the students who have passed away, 27-year-old Venkataramana Pittala perished in a watercraft accident, and 25-year-old Vivek Saini was killed by a homeless drug addict by beating. It is still unknown what caused the deaths of a number of students.

For Indian students wishing to pursue higher education, the US is a popular choice. Over 2.6 lakh Indian students moved to the US during the 2022–2023 academic year, according to US statistics. This represented a 35% increase over the prior session.
