272/7,  KKR missed the SRH record for the highest IPL Run . A look at the five biggest scores in Indian Premier League history

In the match against the Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam, exactly one week after Sunrisers Hyderabad broke the record for the highest total in IPL history, the Kolkata Knight Riders came dangerously close to surpassing it; they scored 272/7 in 20 overs and were only five runs behind. With brilliant half-centuries from Sunil Narine (85), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (54), and strong cameos from Andre Russell (41) and Rinku Singh (26), the Knight Riders put on a display of power-hitting.

Even though there is still a chance for an individual century in this edition of the competition, the KKR destroyed the Delhi Capitals by choosing to bat in Visakhapatnam. Sunil Narine’s early onslaught helped the Knight Riders reach the highest score in Powerplay (88/0 in 6 overs) in this year’s IPL; he smashed seven fours and as many sixes in his innings and walked off to a standing ovation from fans as well as KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan.

Playing in his first match of the season, Raghuvanshi showed no fear when he attacked the DC bowling attack early in his innings. He arrived in the powerplay and wasted no ball, hitting Anrich Nortje for two straight fours in the fifth over.

It was now up to Andre Russell and Rinku Singh, the two power-hitters for the side, to give the Knight Riders a solid finish, which further infuriated DC captain Rishabh Pant. Before being removed in the 14th over by the South African pacer, Raghuvanshi batted at a strike rate of 200 and remained at the crease for 27 deliveries.

Russell scored 41 off 19 balls, smashing three sixes and four fours, while Rinku Singh scored 26 off just eight deliveries.

In just one week, KKR had a great chance to surpass SRH’s record if it were not for Ishant Sharma’s comparatively economical final over, during which he gave up just eight runs.

Here’s the list of the highest scores in the league’s history:

  • 277/3: SRH vs MI, Hyderabad, 2024
  • 272/7: KKR vs DC, Vizag, today*
  • 263/5: RCB vs PWI, Bengaluru, 2013
  • 257/5: LSG vs PBKS, Mohali, 2023
  • 248/3: RCB vs GL, Bengaluru, 2016

KKR has not yet lost.

The Knight Riders made a compelling case to continue their winning run against the Capitals in the first innings after winning their opening games against the SRH and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The Mumbai Indians, who faced the SRH in the game that broke all records last week, put up a good fight, reaching 245 in the run-chase. Now, DC will be looking to overcome the odds when they play at home against Vizag.
