When Virat Kohli batted for Bengaluru against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday, he gave a batting clinic. With four fours and as many sixes to his credit, the legendary player for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru crushed the bowlers all around the mark, finishing his innings at an undefeated 83 in 59 balls.

In the team’s most recent game against the Punjab Kings, the former captain of the RCB made a comeback to scoring runs when he struck 77 off just 49 balls to win the game. Despite captain Faf du Plessis’s early dismissal, he carried the momentum against the Knight Riders on Friday, putting in a scorching start to the innings.

The RCB’s innings were set in motion by his amazing flick shot for six against Mitchell Starc during the powerplay. He picked up boundaries at will, helping the team reach 61/1 in the first six overs. However, as Bengaluru lost wickets at regular intervals during the middle part of the innings, Kohli’s innings slowed down.

In the process of his knock, Kohli also surpassed Chennai Super Kings great and former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the record of most sixes in the competition’s history. Dhoni stood fourth with 240 sixes to his name; Kohli, meanwhile, with his four maximums throughout his innings, now currently stands fourth with 241 sixes in IPL.

Kohli also made history as the RCB player with the most sixes in the team’s history. He achieved the feat ahead of Gayle; since the tournament’s inception in 2008, Kohli is the only player in the league to have played for just one team, meaning that all 241 of his sixes have come for the RCB. The top six scorers for the RCB are listed here.

With Dinesh Karthik smashing three sixes and going undefeated for 20 off just eight balls, the Royal Challengers ended their innings at 182/6 thanks to Kohli’s outstanding knock. Cameron Green (33) and Glenn Maxwell (28) also made significant contributions to the innings.
