Ravi Shankar Prasad, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stated on Friday that the Congress’s declaration of a national emergency and subsequent attempts to amend the Constitution put the document in jeopardy.

Additionally, he stated that there are signs that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will win more than 400 seats in the Lok Sabha. On Friday, the initial round of voting for 102 parliamentary seats located across 21 states and Union Territories took place.

“We talk of ‘400 paar,’ and now there are indications that the figure can go even further,” he said during a press conference held here. The opposition appears to be frustrated with their lack of success; they have one thing to say: the Constitution will be changed. Who is proposing to alter the Constitution?”

“This would not occur, as the Prime Minister and I made very clear. The Constitution was in jeopardy when Congress was in power; it was also in jeopardy when Congress declared an emergency,” he stated.

He went on to criticize the Congress, saying, “There was an attempt to amend the Constitution throughout the emergency. This is how they have historically been. The Congress party made all the efforts to change the Constitution, and the leftist parties were with them; today, Lalu Yadav is with them. The Constitution is in danger not from Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the BJP but from them.”

In all seven phases, Bihar will host elections for 40 Lok Sabha seats.

Phase 1 voting for four seats—Jamui, Nawada, Gaya, and Aurangabad—took place on Friday.

Phases 2 through 5 will see voting on five seats throughout the state. Elections for eight seats each will take place in Phases Six and Seven.

The NDA, which is made up of the BJP, JD (U) (Janata Dal-United), and LJP (Lok Janshakti Party), won 39 out of 40 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, securing victory.

With a vote share of 24.1 percent, the BJP won 17 seats, while JD (U) won 16 seats with a vote share of 22.3 percent. With an 8% vote share, the LJP had taken six seats.

By contrast, the Mahagathbandhan, comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Indian National Congress (INC), and the Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), was only able to secure one seat.
