In Manipur, gunfire was heard this morning close to a polling place. A 25-second video that has gone viral online shows chaos and shouting before two shots are heard very quickly after one another.

Then there is a third shot, probably in reaction to the previous two. Following that, there is a burst of gunfire, which could be the result of an automatic weapon, and the person recording the video hides behind a doorway. Ten seconds pass during this fast-paced exchange of gunfire before it ends.

With two Lok Sabha seats, the northeastern state has been plagued by sporadic violence since May of last year, when fighting between two ethnic groups claimed more than 200 lives.

Which of the two seats of Manipur, Inner Manipur or Outer Manipur, the gunfire originated is unknown. In the 2019 election, Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh’s BJP party emerged victorious in the Inner seat.

Kachui Timothy Zimik, the leader of the Naga People’s Front, won the Outer.
