US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told legislators on Wednesday that the US-India agreement to jointly produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force is revolutionary.
The historic agreement was revealed in June of last year, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic official state visit to the US. To produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force, General Electric and Hindustan Aeronautics signed a memorandum of understanding.
Austin stated that the US and India have a “great relationship” before the House Appropriations Subcommittee.
“Recently, we made it possible for India to manufacture a jet engine and weapon locally. And that is quite groundbreaking. That will give them a great deal of capability. Additionally, we and India are producing an armored vehicle together,” he stated.
When you add them all up, Austin said, “It is probably more than we have seen happen in that region in a very, very long time.”
