A 37-year-old Bihari woman was detained by Delhi police today on suspicion of trafficking in luxury sports utility vehicles (SUVs) that were purportedly stolen.

The accused, Lovely Singh, a Patliputra, Bihar resident, was taken into custody on April 3 following the arrest of her husband, Govind, with a stolen Maruti Brezza last year, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (east) Apoorva Gupta.

“During questioning, Govind disclosed that his spouse, Lovely, had obtained multiple pilfered high-end automobiles from Delhi and had subsequently resold or provided them to other individuals in Bihar and Jharkhand,” the DCP stated.

Singh was the target of multiple police teams trying to apprehend her, but the DCP claimed that she continued to elude them by moving. She also resided in well-known societies to avoid suspicion.

“On December 20, 2023, the Court declared her to be a proclaimed offender and issued a non-bailable warrant against her. Lovely was taken into custody on April 3 in the Patliputra region, and a transit remand order was issued, according to the DCP.

Lovely admitted to the police during questioning that she had started working for an insurance company after graduating, where she had encountered individuals who were involved in the buying and selling of stolen cars, according to the DCP.

“She began buying and selling stolen automobiles with her husband, Govind. She disclosed that in 2021, she was taken into custody in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on suspicion of robbery and theft of vehicles.

Additionally, she forged relationships with auto lifters and other recipients of pilfered luxury cars, participating in the buying and selling of said vehicles, according to her.

Nine SUVs, including a Hyundai Alcazar and a Toyota Fortuner, have been taken by the police. She continued, saying that more research is being done.
