Union Minister and BJP candidate Rajeev Chandrasekhar claimed on Sunday that the Thiruvananthapuram constituency has not seen development in the previous 15 to 20 years, setting up a fierce contest with incumbent Congress MP Shashi Tharoor for the highly coveted seat.
The Union Minister stated, “Thiruvananthapuram has been denied development and jobs for the last 15-20 years,” in an interview with ANI on Sunday. After representing the seat for two years, neither of the two MPs took any action to benefit the populace. People in this area are hankering after jobs, advancement, and change. The younger generation is looking for opportunities.”
Shashi Tharoor, a senior Congress leader and former diplomat running for a third term from the constituency, will present Rajeev Chandrasekhar with a formidable challenge.
Pannyan Raveendran, the leader of the CPI, has been fielded by the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF). Raveendran won the seat in 2005.
The BJP has never taken a seat in the Kerala Lok Sabha, but in the Thiruvananthapuram district, it has only ever won once, with O Rajagopal taking home the Nemam assembly seat in 2016.
Kummanam Rajasekharan of the BJP received 31.3 percent of the vote in Thiruvananthapuram during the 2019 elections, which is the highest vote share the party has received in any of the 20 Lok Sabha seats it ran in the state.
But since Rajeev Chandrasekhar entered the race this year, Thiruvananthapuram’s election has become a three-way race that will be among the most closely followed in the current Lok Sabha elections.
