First of all, voting is restricted to those who are registered with the Indian Election Commission. Registration is open to all individuals who, on January 1, 2024, had reached the age of 18.

After completing an online or in-person registration with the Election Commission, you must verify whether your name appears in the constituency’s electoral records. You can cast a ballot in the elections if your name appears on these lists.

Now, locate the polling place for your constituency by consulting the election schedule. Next, you need to determine which polling place has been assigned to you. It is easy to find more information about this on the EC website.

Things to do on election day

Three poll workers are seated next to each other when one walks into the voting booth.

1 To verify one’s identity, go to the polling officer on the left. To finish the verification process, one must present a voter ID or any other legitimate document.
2 After that, one needs to see the second officer and get their finger permanently inked in order to cast a vote.
3 The voter has to go to the last officer who takes a thumbprint or signature in order to have their name removed from the electoral roll
4 The voter now proceeds to use the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) to cast their ballot. After choosing their preferred political party from the list on the screen, the voter hits the blue button that corresponds with that choice. When it is finished, the VVPAT machine produces a slip attesting to the vote’s casting, and an LED on the EVM turns red.
5 The voter may file a complaint with the presiding officer if they find any discrepancies between their party selection on the VVPAT slip and the actual vote.
