Kate Middleton, Britain’s Princess of Wales, said Friday that she is undergoing preventive chemotherapy after undergoing major abdominal surgery in January after tests revealed cancer was present.
Kate, 42, the wife of Prince William, heir to the throne, spent two weeks in hospital in January after planned surgery for a non-cancerous but unspecified condition, after what her office said was a success.
However, in a video message, Kate said that subsequent tests had found cancer, but she said she was doing well and getting stronger.
My medical team therefore suggested that I should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment,” Kate said in the video, which was filmed on Wednesday.
It certainly came as a huge shock, and William and I are doing what we can to process and manage this personally for the sake of our young family.”
King Charles revealed in February that he was also undergoing treatment for cancer, meaning he had to suspend his public royal duties.
His office, Kensington Palace, said it would not release any further information about the type of cancer. It said he was on the road to recovery and started preventive chemotherapy in February.
Following her operation, the palace said Kate would not return to official duties until after Easter, but her absence from public life has fueled intense speculation on social media.
She and William wanted privacy about the cancer until their children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, began their school holidays on Friday.
“It took me time to recover from major surgery to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it took us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that was appropriate for them and to reassure them that I was going to be OK,” she said.

Kate has not attended any public events since joining other royals for a church service on Christmas Day.
