 Sunrisers Hyderabad’s 277/3

On Wednesday, the Sunrisers Hyderabad batsmen wreaked havoc on the Mumbai Indians, shattering the record for the highest innings total in IPL history. In just 20 overs, SRH amassed 277/3 in Hyderabad, easily surpassing RCB’s previous best of 263/5 against the now-defunct Pune Warriors India in 2013.

The Mumbai Indians made a tactical error in their strategy when playing the SRH. Together with the team management, captain Hardik Pandya may have planned to save Jasprit Bumrah for when Heinrich Klaasen, the SRH’s aggressive power hitter, came up. But their hopes were dashed when Travis Head, making his SRH debut, and Abhishek Sharma unleashed a stunning display of power hitting in the first 10 overs against the MI bowling attack.

In an amazing show, Head broke the SRH record for the fastest fifty by a player by reaching his half-century in just eighteen deliveries. However, the record was quickly surpassed when Abhishek Sharma, a young left-handed batsman, outran him and reached his fifty in just 16 balls while severely punishing the MI bowlers.

Kwena Maphaka, a rookie pacer from South Africa, had a dismal night. He gave up 20 runs in his third over and 22 runs in his second, with Head and Abhishek taking advantage of his lack of experience. In the end, he had miserable figures in his four overs, scoring 0/66. Jasprit Bumrah was the only MI pacer to remain in control during the assault, despite conceding 36 runs without picking up a wicket. SRH had reached 180/3 by the 13th over, and Bumrah was the only bowler to have not given up a boundary in his two overs.

Head’s explosive 62-run innings off just 24 balls, complete with nine fours and a six, made a big impression. Abhishek Sharma, on the other hand, was all about the sixes in his aggressive batting style. He hit seven of them and three fours to reach his 63 off just 23 deliveries.

After they left, Heinrich Klaasen assumed responsibility for the heavy hitting, going undefeated on 80 off just 34 deliveries while launching four fours and seven sixes as the team finished on a massive total in Hyderabad.

The list of the greatest totals in IPL history is as follows:

  • Mumbai Indians vs. Sunrisers Hyderabad: 277/3, 2024

Going for the first victory

After losing by four runs in the first game, Sunrisers Hyderabad rallied with a strong batting display in the massive 209-run chase. Klaasen struck 63 off just 29 balls as they lost by four runs.

In their first game last week, MI was also defeated by the Gujarat Titans.
