Kerala Chief K Surendran is the BJP’s choice to challenge Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad

This Lok Sabha election, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, will run against Kerala BJP chief K Surendran in the prominent Wayanand constituency.

Congress stronghold Wayanad has been a part of the party since 2009. In 2019, Mr. Gandhi was able to win it and keep his seat in the Lok Sabha despite Union Minister Smriti Irani winning the Amethi seat.

The important task facing his opponent this time, Mr. Surendran, is to upend Kerala’s political establishment, which is dominated by the Congress-Left. Both the Congress and the Left are in a national alliance, though they remain rivals in this southern state

In the 2019 general elections, Mr. Surendran came in third place behind the Left and the Congress in the Pathanamthitta constituency. In the Manjeswaram assembly polls of 2016, he had lost by a mere 89 votes. In 2019, he ran in a bypoll but was unsuccessful.

Years ago, he became the face of the protests against the entry of young women into Sabarimala. In 2020, he was appointed to lead the BJP Kerala unit.

Kozhikode native Mr. Surendran was included in the BJP’s fifth list of candidates, which also included former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay and actor Kangana Ranaut.

After Thiruvananthapuram, Wayanad will host a titanic contest between Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and three-time Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

Additionally, the BJP has put up actor-turned-politician G. Krishnakumar from Kollam and former vice chancellor of Sree Sankara Sanskrit University K. S. Radhakrishnan from Ernakulam. Former teacher T. N. Sarasu is running from Alathur in Palakkad.

Kangana Ranaut, an actor from Mandi in her native Himachal Pradesh, made her electoral debut in the BJP’s fifth list, which was the highlight of the announcement. The list, which included 111 candidates from 17 states, included recent additions like Mr. Gangopadhyay and industrialist Naveen Jindal.

The first former judge to enter electoral politics is Mr. Gangopadhyay, who recently joined the BJP after retiring on his own volition. He was selected from Tamluk, Bengal, and will compete against Debangshu Bhattacharya of Trinamool, a youth leader who wrote the famous “Khela Hobe” anthem for the party.

In the run-up to the election, Jitin Prasada, a former Congressman who joined the BJP, replaced Varun Gandhi, the sitting Member of Parliament from Pilibhit. His mother, Maneka Gandhi, has been removed from her current seat, Sultanpur.
