Amritpal Singh, a separatist who is incarcerated in Assam under the National Security Act, will run as an independent in the Lok Sabha elections from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib seat, his attorney stated on Wednesday.

Tarsem Singh, the father of the man, claimed that Amritpal Singh had not previously expressed any interest in entering politics and that he would only comment on the issue after meeting his son on Thursday.

Rajdev Singh Khalsa, Amritpal Singh’s lawyer, stated that he met the separatist on Wednesday in the Dibrugarh jail and asked him to run in the elections.

“Today, I met with Amritpal Singh, bhai sahab, at the central jail in Dibrugarh. During our meeting, I asked bhai sahab to run for parliament again, this time from Khadoor Sahib, on behalf of the people of Khalsa Panth.

“In the best interests of the Pantheon, Bhai Sahab granted my request. “He intends to run as an independent,” declared Khalsa.

The strict NSA was used against Amritpal Singh, the leader of the “Waris Punjab De” group, after he was taken into custody in April of last year.

Currently, he and nine of his associates are being held at the Dibrugarh jail.

After more than a month-long manhunt, Amritpal Singh, who went by the alias of deceased Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was apprehended in Moga’s Rode village on April 23, 2017.

In March of last year, he had eluded the police in the Jalandhar district by using different vehicles and posing as someone else.

Following the February 23, Ajnala incident of the previous year, in which Amritpal Singh and his supporters—some of whom were armed with swords and guns—broke past security barriers and stormed the police station outside of Amritsar, Punjab Police went on the attack to free his aide, Lovepreet Singh Toofan.

He and his friends had been charged in multiple criminal cases for attempting to sow discord among social classes, attacking police officers, and obstructing public servants’ ability to lawfully perform their duties.
