Haji Nurul Islam is the candidate put forward by the Trinamool Congress, which is led by Mamata Banerjee, for the West Bengal seat of Basirhat Lok Sabha.

Bengali businessman Haji Nurul Islam was born in the North 24 Parganas district on November 11, 1964. He is among Trinamool’s most well-known Muslim faces.
Since the Trinamool Congress was founded in January 1998, Mr. Islam has been involved with the party. From 2003 to 2008, he was a member of the Gram Panchayat Samiti in the village of Bahera. He joined the Zila Parishad from the North 24 Parganas in 2008. Islam takes over for Nusrat Jahan, the current Trinamool MP, who defeated BJP candidate Sayantan Basu by 350,000 votes in 2019.
Haji Nurul Islam received a ticket to run for the Basiraht Lok Sabha seat in 2009. With more than 60,000 votes, he defeated Ajay Chakraborty of the CPI. He ran for the West Bengal Assembly in 2016 from the Haroa seat, and he was successful once more. In the Assembly elections of 2021, he also kept his seat.
In the course of his almost twenty-five-year career, Mr. Islam has courted a few controversy. He was charged with encouraging violence between communities during the Deganga riots in 2010. In relation to the violence, he was also the subject of a complaint.
The BJP has been criticizing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly supporting Sheikh Shahjahan, the main defendant in the Sandeshkhali extortion, land grab, and sexual assault cases. Mr. Islam’s announcement that he will run as a Trinamool candidate from Basirhat coincides with this development.
