Lok Sabha elections 2024: The Congress has selected Akoijam Bimol Angomcha, a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), to represent the Inner Manipur constituency in the one-phase election scheduled for April 19. After a career as a teacher, Mr. Akoijam entered politics.
Mr. Akoijam, 57, is a psychology PhD and MA graduate student who teaches at JNU’s School of Social Sciences’ Center for the Study of Social Systems. He had previously been a professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, a think tank, and Delhi University.
Mr. Akoijam has a long history of involvement in democratic movements and public issues. Long before violence broke out between the Kuki-Zo tribes and the Meiteis in May 2023, he had been raising concerns about the simmering ethnic tensions in the border state.

According to Congress sources who spoke with NDTV, he seems to have a lot of acceptance and support from young and inexperienced voters in the districts that make up the Inner Manipur seat. Additionally, the party has been attempting to engage older voters by presenting the scholar as a vocal individual who would be a good representative for Inner Manipur in the legislature.
Mr. Akoijam is one of the few scholars from Manipur who often appears in the media discussing matters pertaining to governance and rights. His advocates think he could be the first MP from Inner Manipur to represent the state’s concerns nationally and to a larger public. If elected, they hope.
In many of the courses he teaches at JNU, Mr. Akoijam uses film, having an avid interest in the medium. At several film festivals, he has served on the jury. In 2004, he made a documentary titled Lang-Goi Challabee, which means Paradise Under Siege. In 2014, he made his first feature film, titled Karigee Kirunee Nungsiradee, which means Why Be Afraid, If You Love.
