An official stated on Friday that Mumbai police had succeeded in recovering Rs 82.55 lakh that a well-known international school in south Mumbai had lost in an online “man in the middle” attack.

An attack known as a “man in the middle” (MITM) occurs when an attacker surreptitiously intercepts and forwards messages between two parties that they think are in communication with one another.

“The school began the process of obtaining materials to build a cafeteria on February 23, and the online fraud occurred between March 16 and March 23. The cyber cell official stated that the school awarded the contract to a UAE-based company that sent its bank details as part of the agreement.

“An unknown individual produced an ID akin to this and supplied information about a US-based bank. If the email was indeed sent by the UAE-based company, the school made a transfer of Rs 87.26 lakh. The Central Region Cyber Police Station received a complaint from the school as soon as they realized something was wrong,” he said.

According to the official, the bank’s nodal officer was contacted after a case was filed under the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act against an unidentified individual. This action resulted in the recovery of Rs 82.55 lakh.

In order to prevent these kinds of attacks, citizens and entities need to periodically upgrade their systems. Before such deals are transacted, email addresses and other details need to be verified again,” he stated.
