Seizing the opportunity, Rahul Gandhi declares, “Congress bank accounts frozen, can not campaign.”

In light of the party’s financial difficulties, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi asserted on Thursday that the party’s accounts have all been frozen and that it is unable to run any campaigns in front of the Lok Sabha elections.

Rahul Gandhi stated, “This is the freezing of Indian democracy, not the freezing of the bank accounts of the Congress party.” “We can not do anything as the largest opposition party; we can not send our leaders anywhere or schedule ads. This is a democratic attack.”

At a rare joint press conference with incumbent president Mallikarjun Kharge and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi made the following remarks.

The Wayanad MP claimed that the Congress party’s account was targeted two months prior to the election campaign.

“Two notices, one from the 1990s and the other from six or seven years ago,” Gandhi stated. Our entire financial identity is in jeopardy—we could lose ₹14 lakhs in penalties. The Election Commission has not even said anything…Already, our ability to fight elections has been damaged; we have already lost a month,” he said.

Further, Rahul Gandhi also blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. “This is a criminal action on the Congress party, a criminal action done by the prime minister and the home minister,” Gandhi said.

“The idea that India is a democracy is a lie,” he continued. India does not currently practice democracy. It is untrue to say that India is the largest democracy in the world. A total fabrication. We receive 20% of the vote in India, but we cannot afford to buy anything with ₹2. It is all part of a plot to ruin our chances of winning the elections. Even though our bank accounts are now open, the Indian democracy has suffered greatly from massive debt.”

Modi’s methodical attempt to destroy the Congress: Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Gandhi claimed at the press conference on Thursday that Modi has been making a “systematic effort” to financially “cripple” the Congress.

“We are discussing a very serious issue today. The problem impacts democracy in general as well as the Indian National Congress specifically. The Prime Minister is working methodically to financially ruin the Indian National Congress, according to Sonia Gandhi.

According to Mallikarjun Kharge, a democracy must have fair elections and level playing fields for all political parties.

The president of Congress stated, “It should not be the case that the one in power should have authority over media and control over IT, ED, Election Commission, and other autonomous bodies.”

Congress is notified of income taxes

The party’s four primary bank accounts were taken in February by the income tax department in response to a ₹210 crore tax demand for the 2018–19 fiscal year.

The elderly party claimed they would not be able to “pay bills and salaries if their accounts were frozen” when they approached the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal to request a halt to the IT department’s actions.

Nevertheless, the grand old party’s application was denied by the tribunal.

On March 8, the Congress then filed a challenge against the tribunal’s ruling with the Delhi High Court. When the income was estimated to be more than ₹199 crore for the assessment year 2018–19, the assessing officer raised a tax demand of more than ₹100 crore.

The high court last week declined to intervene in the tribunal’s decision to not stay a notice that the IT department had sent to Congress.
