The post was made amid rumors that the 64-year-old actor, a Congress candidate from Karnal, Haryana, would run in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. According to certain reports, the Congress intended to field Mr. Dutt in order to capitalize on his celebrity status in a seat where the BJP has selected Manohar Lal Khattar, a former chief minister of Haryana and heavyweight leader. In the elections of 2014 and 2019, the BJP secured the Karnal seat. The Congress had occupied the position for two terms prior to that.

In an Arms Act case, Sanjay Dutt was found guilty of possessing illicit firearms that he had taken from suspects in the 1993 Bombay blasts. He was given a five-year prison sentence, which he served out in 2016.

Given that his ancestral village is located in the Yamunanagar district, Mr. Dutt has strong ties to Haryana. He had earlier traveled to the state as an Abhay Singh Chautala campaigner for the Indian National Lok Dal.

The late Sunil Dutt, an actor and the father of Sanjay Dutt, was a minister in the Manmohan Singh administration in addition to being a multiple term Congress MP. Priya Dutt, his sister, has also served as a Congress member. But in the Lok Sabha, his sister and father have both represented Mumbai.
