Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered the creation of a special investigation team to look into an alleged sex scandal involving Hassan MP and Janata Dal (Secular) candidate from the seat, Prajwal Revanna, one day after voting took place in the constituency. Mr. Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and leader of the JDS, has departed for Germany.
The chief minister was urged to form a special investigation team by the Karnataka State Commission for Women on Thursday, following the circulation of videos showing sexual acts in Hassan. Some of the videos purportedly showed women being coerced into having their bodies captured on camera without their consent.
“The government has decided to form a special investigation team in connection with the Prajwal Revanna obscene video case,” Siddaramaiah wrote in Kannada on X on Saturday, announcing the decision. In Hassan district, there are pornographic videos going around that seem to show women being sexually assaulted.
“With this background, the Women’s Commission Chairperson had requested in writing that the government launch a SIT investigation. They requested that this decision be made, and it was,” he wrote.
Mr. Revanna departed early on Saturday morning for Germany.
The JDS and the BJP are in an alliance, and DK Shivakumar, the deputy chief minister of Karnataka, also demanded answers from the ruling party at the federal level earlier in the day.
“Not just any Hassan leader at random is the target of the allegations of sexual assault. (BJP Chief of Karnataka) by Vijayendra and others must respond. They claim that the Women’s Commission is attempting to damage their reputation, according to reports I have read. The home minister and the chief minister have received a letter from the Commission, Mr. Shivakumar was cited by news agency ANI as saying.
Mr. Shivakumar responded to JDS leader and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy’s veiled accusation against him in the case by saying, “Let him bring up my name.” I will make him pay. Is he using this speech to defend sexual assaults against women?
