Ten crorepati candidates are running in the first round of the Bengal Lok Sabha elections. An analysis of the affidavits of the 37 candidates running for the three Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal—Jalpaiguri (SC), Cooch Behar (SC), and Alipurduar (ST)—reveals that ten of them are crorepatis.

The first phase of elections for the Lok Sabha seats in Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar will take place on April 19.

Following a review of the affidavits, West Bengal Election Watch and the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) declared on Monday that three independent candidates, two each from the BJP and Trinamool Congress, and one each from the CPI(M), Congress, and RSP, are crorepatis.

Debraj Barman of the CPI(M), who is running for the Lok Sabha seat in Jalpaiguri (SC), has the highest net worth of all the candidates at Rs 3,89,89,468. With assets of Rs 12,117, Chandan Oraon of SUCI, who is running from Alipurduar (ST), is the least wealthy candidate.

According to the study, four of the five candidates have significant offenses recorded against them, and five of them have filed criminal cases against themselves.

16 of the candidates had qualifications between class 8 and 12, while 20 were graduates or held higher education degrees, according to an analysis of their educational backgrounds. One candidate stated that he is illiterate.

Overall, fifteen nominees are between the ages of 51 and 70, while 21 candidates have stated that they are between the ages of 25 and 50. One candidate is 71 years old.
