In a startling video, a Baltimore bridge was shown partially collapsing after being struck by a container ship. The incident happened on March 26, a Tuesday, just before 1:30 am.
The 3-kilometer-long Francis Scott Key Bridge is a section of the I-95 freeway. It connects Miami, Florida, to Maine and serves as the primary east-coast, north-south route in the United States.

According to reports on X, the fire department and the Coast Guard are among the agencies that have now declared a mass casualty incident. A representative for the Baltimore City Fire Department has additionally verified that the collapse qualifies as a “mass casualty event.”
Following the collapse of the Baltimore Bridge, “as many as seven individuals and several vehicles” have fallen into the river, according to Chief Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore City Fire Department, who confirmed this information to the BBC. Currently, there is a multi-agency rescue operation in progress. The US Coast Guard and other Maryland agencies are working with the fire department, which is in charge of it.
Every lane in both directions has been closed, according to the Maryland Transport Authority, and traffic is currently being rerouted through the harbor tunnel or along the I-95 interstate through the city.
