In the face of protests from Left-backed student organizations, the state-run Jadavpur University in Kolkata withdrew the permission it granted to the ABVP, an RSS affiliate, to celebrate Ram Navami on campus on Wednesday.
They said that they had permission from the varsity to celebrate Ram Navami from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. near Gate 3.
Registrar Snehamanju Basu stated in a notice that written complaints about the program’s potential to disturb the peace and harmony on campus had been received from a variety of student groups.
The notice stated that the “no-objection” was being withdrawn as a result.
The notice also referenced a letter from the Department of Higher Education highlighting concerns about the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which is in place for both “safeguarding the right of every individual for peaceful and undisturbed home life” and the Lok Sabha elections.
The ABVP said that the authorities withdrew the permission due to pressure from left-wing organizations like AISA and SFI, calling the varsity’s decision unfortunate.
The registrar had granted permission for the event, which was supposed to be peaceful, just one day prior. They made a sudden U-turn today,” an ABVP leader remarked.
According to a university official, the administration was against a repeat of the events that happened on January 22, when a group of senior professors were physically assaulted during a dispute between various student outfits during a program honoring the consecration of the Ram Temple.
Thus, he said, permission was revoked as soon as some groups objected to Ram Navami celebrations on campus.
