Germany’s ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, stated that regardless of the outcome of the world’s largest elections, which begin in India on April 19, “more of India” will be seen internationally.

Speaking to a crowd on Monday at a function organized by a prestigious private university in this city, he added that the G20 Presidency of India “gave us a little taste of that.”

In his speech, he discussed numerous ongoing or unresolved global issues, including the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and Iran and Israel.

“Amidst this extremely challenging scenario, I cannot recall the world experiencing such a challenging period as it is currently.” From the perspective of the European Union, we can clearly see how much India is rising. We watch with admiration as the largest election in history begins on Friday. “This is a festival of democracy, and it is quite an exercise,” Mr. Ackermann remarked.

“I think we will see more of India on the international stage, no matter what happens in these elections or who wins them,” stated the envoy.

“We got a tiny taste of that during the G20 Presidency. As Europeans and Germans, we believe that India has a legitimate claim to a seat at the big table. India is, and needs to be, more visible and recognized, whether it is at the UNSC or somewhere else,” he continued.

On December 1, 2022, India took up the presidency of the powerful bloc for a year, which culminated in the announcement of the New Delhi Declaration during the G20 Summit in September of last year.

“The New Delhi G20 Leaders’ Summit held on September 9–10 brought the deliberations under our G20 Presidency to a successful culmination. “It was the most high-profile international gathering in the history of independent India, with the G20 comprising all P5 countries and representing 85% of global GDP, 75% of world trade, and two-thirds of the world population,” a summary posted on the G20 Indian Presidency website states.

Everyone supported the theme, “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” which was based on the long-held belief of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.” The statement reads, “The size, scale, and scope of India’s G20 Presidency were unprecedented, with over 200 meetings in 60 Indian cities in all our 28 states and 8 UTs, across 40 different mechanisms, including Sherpa and Finance Track Working Groups as well as Engagement Groups.”

According to the German envoy, India is the only nation that “deserves” this role. “But one must remember that it is a role with great expectations as well. More than ever, many people will evaluate India. Its international image and policies will be scrutinized in addition to those of the nations of the so-called “Global South,” Mr. Ackermann stated.

And now, as he said, “as we expect India to play a bigger role in international politics,” many governments, including the German government, are contacting India.

“But keep in mind that it is a challenging project, the work is not simple, and expectations and hopes are not the same. Assume for the moment that US and Russian expectations of India differ. “What is the plan for India to navigate this new role?” asked the envoy.

The OP Jindal Global University served as the event’s host, and the envoy spoke on the topic of “India-Europe Partnership in a Multipolar World.”

“For India’s benefit, a strong and reliable alliance with Europe, especially Germany, is desirable. I believe that we are almost there. India and Europe share a deep desire to preserve the global order based on rules, the speaker stated.
