Ramdas Athawale, Union Minister of State for Social Justice, has refuted claims made by the Congress that the Narendra Modi-led NDA government intends to amend the Constitution.

Athawale, a well-known Dalit leader from Maharashtra and an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party, declared on Tuesday that he would step down if any attempt was made to amend the Constitution.

The minister, who leads the Republican Party of India (Athawale), was in the country to support Sunil Mendhe, the ruling alliance’s candidate for the Lok Sabha seat from Bhandara-Gondia.

“The Congress and other opposition parties are attempting to mislead people by claiming that if this government wins 400 or more seats, it would change the Constitution. However, there are no issues with the current Modi-led NDA government. Their allegation is wholly unfounded, and I will resign from the cabinet and stop supporting the BJP if the government attempts anything along these lines,” he declared.

Mr. Athawale continued, “PM Modi is a man with vision” who is working for the nation’s advancement.

Remarkably, BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde recently declared that in order to “set right the distortions and unnecessary additions made to it by the Congress,” his party needed a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament.

After that, the BJP moved to defuse the controversy that had been raised by Hegde’s remarks by referring to them as his “personal opinion” and requesting that he provide more context.
