The chatter surrounding India’s squad selection for the T20 World Cup 2024 has grown louder in the past couple of weeks and with reports suggesting that the announcement may come in the first week of May, the wicket-keeping slot has multiple choices for the selectors at this point. Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are some of the names in consideration with KL Rahul being considered as both a specialist batter as well as wicket-keeping option. Legendary Australia cricketer Adam Gilchrist had his say about Rahul’s World Cup selection chances and what he can do to guarantee his spot.

“It’s probably going to be hard to shut it down for the rest of the tournament (talk about T20 World Cup selection). The narrative has to get away from who’s going on the World cup. How do they get into the World cup? He’s got to work out like every other player in this tournament. He needs to think – How am I going to win this tournament for my franchise. How am I going to win it tonight. I know there is this overarching shadow of the World Cup but win the IPL, be the best player you can be in winning the IPL and you’ll be on the plane if you’re in the narrative of selecting,” he said on Cricbuzz.

Meanwhile, ex-Australia skipper Ricky Ponting gave his verdict on IPL’s ‘Impact Player’ rule.

“Look, I think, I read some really, really interesting answers from Rohit Sharma on this yesterday. This Impact Player is taking the all-rounders out of the game a little bit,” Ponting said.

“You know you can play your specialist batsman down till No. 8. pretty much. But look, I think for a coach and for the players, it’s probably not ideal, but I think you know a lot of what this game tries to do is to entertain people,” Ponting explained his point of view.

“The T20 game is an entertainment package and it’s probably better asking the spectator what they think about the impact player, because if everyone is loving the fact that teams are making, you know, 220 up to 250 in a lot of the games, and the spectators like seeing it, then it should stay. But if the spectators aren’t liking it as much, then there’s no reason why I couldn’t go back to the old,” he added.
